La Isla - Azteca América

El lunes 2 de septiembre inició la transmisión de la segunda temporada de este reality por Azteca América en horario estelar.

El programa cuenta con un elemento importantísimo para agradar al publico Hispano en Estados Unidos, el formato. Mientras los realities de fin de semana de Univisión y la misma Azteca tienen un formato de un día a la semana por varias horas, La Isla se trasmite entre semana con episodios de una hora.

Los participantes "famosos y celebridades" (y lo digo entre comillas porque así se llaman los equipos con los que participan) son más conocidos y tienen mayor gancho para atraer audiencias de un rango mayor de edades que en la temporada anterior. Además, tienen la virtud de ser de muchas ramas diferentes del entretenimiento, ya que hay conductores, actores, deportistas y cantantes. En el equipo de los "desconocidos" encontramos modelos, estudiantes, administradores de empresas, deportistas y hasta un pescador.

Las pruebas a las que se enfrentan (hasta el momento) los participantes son más duras y representan un mayor reto que las de la temporada pasada. Cabe notar que el nivel de producción es mucho mayor y se nota en el montaje de las mismas pruebas, así como en las tomas utilizadas y editadas. 

Creo que es un acierto muy grande de Azteca América tener este tipo de programación en horario estelar y no tratar de competir con las cadenas consagradas a las telenovelas. El público merece una opción diferente de entretenimiento que no sea "sonsa" pero si divertida. Creo que además de entretener este programa muestra la importancia de valores como el trabajo en equipo, la solidaridad, aprender a valorar lo que se tiene y sobre todo a no juzgar a la gente por su apariencia física u origen social. Cuando se trata de ganar todos son iguales en un equipo y si gana uno, ganan todos. 

Lo único que no me gusta es que vaya diferido una semana con la programación en México. los mismos programas de Azteca comentan lo que va a pasar en la siguiente semana.

La Tempestad - Univision

This new novela on Univision premiered last night at 9:00 PM.  I would like to begin this review by admitting that the novela caught my attention since the moment it started.

The pace of the show was fast and the entire episode seemed to last 30 minutes when in fact was an hour long.  I was very hesitant on the casting knowing that a former Miss Universe was the leading actress on this show. I couldn’t help thinking that she was there because of her undeniable beauty but not so much for her unknown talent.  I was completely wrong! Ximena Navarrete did a very good job and I am sure her acting will keep improving each episode.

The rest of the characters that appeared on yesterdays episode were well designed and with good actors behind them.  Veracruz looked amazing and the “Fiesta Del Pueblo” was very well done as well.

The only thing that I didn’t like was the special effects during the fight on the boat and the storm.  The boat “La Tempestad” looked animated, almost like a cartoon. They should have invested more in special effects to make those scenes more believable.

Now, the story per se is nothing new, a love triangle with a mother who abandoned a kid at birth and found her. The villains are very predictable and what is going to happen is no secret for anyone. What saves this novela is the pace of the scenes, the amazing natural scenarios where its being filmed and the good actors. We know people will watch whatever William Levy is on.  Ivan Sanchez, better know as “El Gallego” from La Reina Del Sur, is also part of the cast and he is also attracting a lot of viewers. The rest of the cast is well known and also have a good impact on the audience. Cesar Evora, Daniela Romo,  Maria Sorte, Mariana Seonae, Arturo Peniche, Nora Salinas and Manuel Ojeda.

Vivir a Destiempo - Azteca América

La telenovela estrenada hace casi dos meses por Azteca América con Edith González, Humberto Zurita, Ramiro Fumazoni, Andrea Noli, Martha Verduzco, Juan Manuel Bernal y  Verónica Merchant entre otros actores ha hecho que vuelva a ver una novela de Azteca. Así es, desde La vida en el espejo no veía una novela producida por ellos.

Hablando de la novela en sí, es una historia de amor que cuenta con los principios básicos para hacer una historia en este género televisivo interesante: triangulo amoroso, traición, buenos, malos y una gran víctima. Entonces, ¿qué la hace diferente?  Simplemente la manera en que está escrita y contada la historia.  Es un drama que apela a la inteligencia del espectador mediante diálogos y situaciones reales para la clase media y alta de México.

En Vivir a Destiempo los actores están perfectamente alineados a su edad real y apariencia física. Vemos a una Edith González madre de dos adultos jóvenes de veintitantos años.  

Las problemáticas de los jóvenes son las que cualquier chavo de su edad se enfrenta: drogas, alcohol, sexo, amor, encajar en un grupo de amigos, la universidad, trabajar, vida familiar, odiar y amar a los padres.

Los padres tienen otro tipo de problemas que si bien no son comúnmente contados en una telenovela son reales: estancamiento de la relación en pareja, infidelidad, divorcios, resentimientos e ilusiones de juventud, crisis económica, situación laboral, crecimiento de los hijos y la lucha en saber distinguir el límite de su autoridad cuando ya no son adolescentes. También se plantea la relación con sus padres que ya son adultos mayores, así como sus  problemas y enfermedades propios de la edad.

Dentro de toda esta realidad la telenovela tiene pocos personajes y todas las historias están entrelazadas por medio de las familias, trabajo y amistades.  Es muy importante destacar que es una novela que aunque hay una pareja protagónica, las historias paralelas son igualmente importantes porque sin ellas la historia principal no tendría sentido.  ¿A qué me refiero? A que en la gran mayoría de las novelas hay historias de relleno que uno las puede adelantar en el DVR y la historia principal no se ve afectada. En este caso, sin las historias paralelas, la historia principal sería diferente.

Otro aspecto notorio es que no hay un cura o padre que juzgue a los personajes por sus acciones. Aquí no vemos a santos y pecadores. Tampoco está la muchacha que se enamora del rico, ni la madrastra maldita. 

¡Gran historia y grandes actuaciones!

En pocas palabras, les recomiendo ampliamente esta novela que pasa todos los días a las 6:00 PM por Azteca América.

La Voz Kids - Telemundo

La Voz Kids (The Voice-Kids) premiered last night on Telemundo.  Even though this format is not old yet, it is very well known by most people. I was afraid that this was going to be a copy-paste from its original run on NBC with the only difference being in Spanish. Paulina Rubio was one of the coaches from the Mexican Version La Voz Mexico (The Voice – Mexico) last season. It was very easy to guess what was going to happen in this U.S. version.

The show surprised me since the beginning.  Although it was the same format as the one used on NBC, it was very well adapted for kids.  Compared to other singing reality shows dedicated to children like Pequeños Gigantes –Televisa/Univision, La Voz Kids talks to kids like kids, neither the coaches or the hosts treat the children like small adults. It was remarkable the way kids are rejected from the competition. This edition of the Voice avoided all cruelty and reminded us that kids are more sensitive, honest and that they needed to be treated with love.  

The coaches: Paulina Rubio, Prince Royce and Roberto Tapia.  It is obvious that Paulina is the star of the show. She sits in the middle and is the one that leads the show. Prince Royce is very friendly with the kids and shows his sweet side while talking to contestants. However, Roberto Tapia was extremely shy and didn’t talk much, not even to convince the contestants to join his team. It almost seemed that he had nothing to do in the show. Please note that I am not questioning his talent here.

The kids: Amazing voices, very charismatic kids!

A new aspect to this show is the family history each kid brings to the show.  Opposed to the NBC version where the only story that matters is the contestant’s, La Voz Kids enhances the family values.

A very positive aspect of the show is that the kids are allowed to sing in Spanish and English, acknowledging the diversity in our community.  Our kids are fully bilingual and they can sing and speak in their language of choice.

A very smart thing to do was bringing American-Latino Celebrities to host the show. We are used to seeing Mexican hosts in most Hispanic reality shows in the US. This time Daisy Fuentes makes an emphasis that this is a TV show produced by and for Latinos in the US. Her Spanish accent makes it more interesting.

Introduction

Hello everybody!

This is the first posting in this new blog. I have to admit that this is the very first time that I do something related to blogs. Let's hope it works out well.

The main reason why I decided to create a blog is to share my opinions related to Hispanic TV in the United States. I am originally from Mexico City but I have been living in the US since March 2003.  I have always loved TV and my friends and coworkers agree that I am the go-to person for any Hispanic entertainment related question.

Some of you may wonder if I will share any of the insights and findings from my research clients in this blog and the answer is simple: NO. I will only express my personal point of view on the Hispanic programming in the The U.S. Sometimes my blog will be in Spanish, that's just the nature of our reality, we are bilinguals!

So stay tuned because I will review Novelas, News Shows, Realities and everything in between.
